Montgomery County Commuter Services and the Silver Spring, Friendship Heights, Bethesda, North Bethesda and Greater Shady Grove Transportation Management districts are hosting a Walk and Ride Challenge. The event is designed to encourage commuters to combine transit with walking and to incorporate more walking into their daily routines. The challenge will take place from September 8 through September 26, except in Bethesda, which will run from September 7 through September 27.
Teams of up to five members receive free pedometers to track their progress in seeing who can take the most steps.
Each week, participants walking more than 50,000 steps will be entered into a drawing to win a new Kindle. Those walking 25,000-49,999 steps will be entered into a drawing for other prizes such as gift cards to local retailers and restaurants. Grand prize winners will receive a $125 gift card. Second place winners will receive a $75 gift card and third place winners, a $50 gift card.
