MCDOT Continues Leaf Collection Through Mid-December

Two collections will take place on each leaf collection district street. The leaf vacuum collection district is bounded by I-495; I-270; the Rockville City limits; Norbeck, Bel Pre and Bonifant roads; Northwest Branch Park; and the District of Columbia and Prince George’s County lines. Find out if your home is in the leaf district by entering your address here.

Residents are asked to pile leaves near the street, but not on the road. Check out the video on how to prepare leaves properly and why it is important to keep leaf piles clear of trash and off of the streets.

If you are looking for a way to help your community, but still want to remain socially distanced and outdoors, please consider reaching out to your elderly neighbor or neighbors with disabilities to ask if they need help raking their leaves. Raking leaves is a great way to help others while getting good exercise.

What Happens to Your Leaves Once Collected?

You've likely seen Leafgro at your local garden center but, do you know where it comes from? Leaves collected from MCDOT's leaf collection program are stored for a year, then mulched, composted, and then packaged to be sold as Leafgro®. Profits from sales are put directly back into the leafing program. Learn more here.

MCDOT Reminds Residents to Plan Out Their Evenings This Holiday Season & Never Drink and Drive

During the Thanksgiving weekend, millions will hit our nation's roads, eager to spend time with family and friends. It’s one of the busiest travel times of the year and the most dangerous. More people on the roadways means the potential for more vehicle crashes. A popular trend, Thanksgiving Eve, or “Blackout Wednesday,” highlights - and even encourages - the heavy consumption of alcohol on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.  Remember: Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving.

  • From 2015 to 2019, 135 drivers involved in fatal crashes on Thanksgiving Eve were alcohol-impaired, and over the entire holiday period, nearly 800 people died in alcohol-impaired crashes.
  • During the 2019 Thanksgiving holiday period, more than four times as many drivers were involved in a fatal crash and 10,142 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes.

Follow these NHTSA tips if you’ve been drinking or see a possible drunk driver:

  • Buzzed driving is drunk driving. Don't risk it.
  • Plan ahead. If you don't have a designated driver, contact a friend or family member, use public transportation, a taxi or ride share service like Uber or Lyft.
  • If you see a suspected drunk driver on the roadway call 9-1-1 to report the driver to authorities. It could save lives and help everyone enjoy a safe and happy holiday.
  • Never let family or friends drive if they have had too much alcohol to drink. Take the keys away and make arrangements for him/her to get home safely.

Alternative Transportation Options Available in Montgomery County for Riders Impacted by Metrorail Slowdown

As a safety measure, Metro has taken its 7000-series railcars out of service, which comprises approximately 60 percent of its railcar fleet. The result is that Metrorail is operating with reduced service on all lines. Longer wait times and concerns of overcrowding amidst the lingering COVID-19 health crisis have left many travelers searching for alternatives. MCDOT has put together some alternative ways to get you where you need to go. Get the details here.

As Daylight Saving Time Ends this Weekend, MCDOT and Vision Zero Promote Pedestrian Safety

The fall and winter months bring less daylight and darker commuting hours. The end of Daylight Savings Time begins overnight this Saturday and clocks will need to be turned back one hour. Getting darker earlier can lead to an increase in crashes between drivers and pedestrians. Past records show that two-thirds of all fatal pedestrian injuries over the last four years occurred between dusk and dawn.

To address the changing conditions, MCDOT continues to make upgrades to streetlights and crosswalks to protect pedestrians and urges residents to lookout for each other and obey the rules of the road. This collaboration is facilitated by the County’s Vision Zero Initiative, which is committed to reducing, and eventually eliminating all traffic-related deaths.

Safety tips:

  • Drivers should be on the lookout for pedestrians, bicyclists, and children.
  • Drivers should reduce speed, turn on headlights earlier and be alert.
  • Wait for the walk signal. If there is no traffic signal, make sure it’s clear to cross. Look left, right and then left again before crossing.
  • If there are no sidewalks, walk against traffic so drivers can see you more clearly.

leafcollectionsignage

MCDOT's Leaf Vacuum Collection Begins Nov. 8, and Continues Through Mid-December

MCDOT will begin its annual leaf vacuuming with two collections in every leaf collection district street this fall. This year, a resident can easily find the collection schedule online by simply entering an address.

The leaf zone is bounded by I-495, I-270, the Rockville City limits, Norbeck, Bel Pre and Bonifant roads, Northwest Branch Park, the District of Columbia and Prince George’s County lines.

Prior to collection, signs will be posted along streets directing residents to the online leaf collection map and collection date information.

Residents are asked to pile leaves near the street, but off the road. Avoid placing leaves on road shoulders, bike lanes and rain gardens as leaves in these areas can disrupt traffic, negatively impact stormwater drainage, hamper snow removal operations and become a fire hazard for automobiles parked over them. Leaf piles also limit the availability of residential parking, and when wet, can pose a hazard to cyclists and pedestrians. Learn more here.
