MCDOT to Begin Bridge Reconstruction and Roadway and Storm Drainage Improvement Projects

MCDOT’s Division of Transportation Engineering Construction will soon begin two projects: 

Replacement of the Pennyfield Lock Road Bridge and roadway and storm drainage improvements at Wapakoneta and Wehawken roads in Glen Echo Heights.

The Pennyfield Lock Road Bridge passes over a tributary of Muddy Branch. The bridge was built in 1930 and is a single concrete slab structure with one-14-foot-wide lane that carries two-way traffic. The replacement bridge will have one 12-foot traffic lane and two two-foot shoulders for a total width of sixteen feet to accommodate two bike lanes on the bridge. The bridge will be aligned west of the existing structure.

The existing bridge will remain open during construction, providing park access.

Along Wapakoneta Road, the lack of a drainage system or roadside ditches affects 22 homes, causing severe residential flooding during rain storms, erosion to roadway shoulders and roadway flooding. In response to resident concerns, MCDOT will install curbs and gutters, a storm drain system and reconstruct the road, followed by pavement resurfacing.  Follow the project’s progress on Twitter at #WapakonetaRd.

SHA to Rehabilitate Seminary Road Bridge Over I-495 Starting This Summer

The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin rehabilitation of a bridge on Seminary Road over I-495 in the summer of 2017. The project will take about a year to complete and will replace the riding surface and girders and strengthen the concrete supports to improve safety and mobility and reduce maintenance costs. The project is part of SHA’s Bridge System Preservation program. Read more.

MCDOT’s Division of Transportation Engineering (DTE) designs and constructs transportation systems and infrastructure, including bikeways, sidewalks, transit facilities, ADA ramps, roads and storm drains; inspects, maintains and builds bridges; and acquires property for projects.

Ride On Routes 12 and 13 Detoured During Carroll Avenue Bridge Construction

Ride On routes 12 and 13 will follow a detour for about 18 months as the Maryland Department of Transportation's State Highway Administration rehabilitates the Carroll Avenue Bridge over Sligo Creek in Takoma Park. Buses traveling in both directions will use Flower, Maplewood, Maple and Lincoln avenues to return to their normal routing on Carroll Avenue.

Riders who typically board in the impacted area of Carroll Avenue should instead board at the Flower Avenue stops.

Leggett Announces Recommended FY17 Operating Budget; Includes Funding to Move Forward on Bus Rapid Transit On March 15, County Executive Ike Leggett released his recommended fiscal year 2017 budget. The Senior Connection Wins National Award; Senior Connection Seeking More Volunteer Drivers The National Volunteer Transportation Center (NVTC), which recognizes outstanding volunteer transportation programs across the country, selected the Senior Connection as its Grand STAR Award winner. New Capital Bikeshare Members Can Now Use Credit or Debit Cards as their "Key" Capital Bikeshare has unveiled a new feature that will provide faster access to its system for new members and make it more convenient for existing members. The innovative “Card as Key” feature allows new Capital Bikeshare members to immediately begin checking out bikes at any station in the system by using the credit or debit card they charged to purchase their membership. Previously, new members had to wait until they received their keys in the mail before they could begin riding. Read more. SHA Begins Drainage Project on Connecticut Avenue On November 30 (weather permitting), the State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin a drainage improvement project to construct new channel gutters along southbound Connecticut Avenue in Chevy Chase at the intersections of Woodbine Street and Blackthorn Street.
